Full container or shared container? How to choose the better option for your cargo to Syria

The first question on every shipment to Syria: do I book a container for my cargo alone, or ship it shared with other cargo? The answer starts with volume, but it does not end there. This is what we go through with a customer before we suggest a method.

The difference

Full container load and less than container load

With a full container (FCL) you book the whole container for your cargo, 20 ft, 40 ft or 40 ft high cube, and pay for all of it whether you fill it or not. It is loaded at the supplier or the warehouse, sealed, and not opened until clearance at the Syrian port.

With LCL your cargo is grouped with other shippers' cargo in one container, and you pay for the space it takes in cubic metres, or by weight if the cargo is heavy for its size. On arrival the shared container is unpacked and each shipment is released to its owner. Details on our LCL page.

  • LCL: rate per cubic metre or by weight
  • FCL stays sealed until clearance

Volume

A rough guide: about 15 cubic metres

LCL is usually the cheaper option for small quantities: a few cubic metres or a handful of pallets. As volume grows, the LCL cost rises with every cubic metre while the container rate stays the same. Once your cargo approaches about 15 cubic metres or more, a full container is in many cases close to the LCL cost or below it.

That figure is a rough guide, not a fixed rule. The point where the two costs meet moves with the shipping line, the port of loading, and unpacking and clearance charges in Syria. So we price both methods for each shipment instead of relying on the number alone.

Other factors

What changes the decision besides volume

The cargo. Fragile, valuable or handling-sensitive goods are safer in a full container, because LCL goes through extra consolidation and unpacking steps in warehouses.

Timing. An LCL shipment waits at the consolidation warehouse until the shared container closes on its date, and after arrival it waits for the container to be unpacked and every shipment cleared. A full container loads when your cargo is ready and is released after its own clearance.

Several suppliers. If your goods come from several suppliers, they can be gathered in a warehouse and shipped together in one container. We explain this in consolidating multi-supplier cargo in Jebel Ali.

  • Fragile or valuable: FCL is safer
  • Urgent: FCL is usually faster
  • Several suppliers: consolidate into one container

Before booking

How we compare the two costs for you

Send us the port of loading, the package dimensions or total volume in cubic metres, the total weight, the type of goods and their HS code, and the ready date. We send you the LCL price and the full container price side by side, with the transit time of each.

If you choose a full container we help you pick the right size; if you choose LCL we tell you the closing date of the next shared container. Ask for the comparison through request a quote, or read about full container shipping to Syria.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is a full container cheaper than LCL?

As a rough guide, when the cargo approaches about 15 cubic metres or more. The actual point moves with the line, the port and the charges, so we price both methods for each shipment.

How is LCL priced?

By the space the cargo takes in cubic metres, or by weight if it is heavy for its size.

Is LCL slower?

Usually yes, because the shipment waits for the shared container to close before sailing, then for unpacking and clearance of all shipments after arrival.

My goods come from several suppliers. What should I choose?

They can be consolidated in a warehouse and shipped together, as a full container if the volume allows or as LCL if it is small.

Not sure which is cheaper for your cargo?

Send us the volume, weight and port of loading, and we will send you the price and transit time of both methods.
