Freight forwarding in Egypt

Cargo moving through Alexandria, Port Said, Damietta or Ain Sokhna is coordinated by one operations desk, and cleared by licensed Egyptian brokers we appoint and supervise. If the same cargo continues to Syria or the Gulf, it stays with the same desk.

Services

What we coordinate in Egypt

Sea, air and road movement, with the customs file prepared alongside rather than after it.

Sea freight covers FCL, LCL and consolidation into and out of the Egyptian seaports. Air freight runs through Cairo International, where advance cargo information has been mandatory since January 2026 and the ACID number must exist before the shipment is loaded. Road freight covers domestic Egyptian movement and the onward regional legs.

Project cargo and dangerous goods are handled as separate disciplines rather than as a heavier version of general cargo, because the documentation, the berth and the handling equipment are all different.

  • Sea freight: FCL, LCL, consolidation
  • Air freight through Cairo International
  • Road freight, domestic and onward
  • Customs clearance: ACID, Nafeza, CargoX
  • Project cargo and heavy lift
  • Dangerous goods and chemicals

Ports

The four seaports, and what each is best for

They are not interchangeable, and the choice is made at booking rather than on arrival.

Alexandria carries broad liner coverage and handles a major share of general cargo. Port Said sits on the northern approach to the Suez Canal and absorbs transhipment volume most directly. Damietta is the container port that also serves the Syria lane. Ain Sokhna is the Red Sea gateway and the natural choice for Gulf and Asian routings.

Which one suits a consignment depends on the liner service, the cargo character and the inland destination. Discharging at the wrong port is rarely just a longer road leg.

  • Alexandria: widest liner coverage
  • Port Said: Suez Canal transhipment
  • Damietta: containers and the Syria lane
  • Ain Sokhna: Red Sea, Gulf and Asia
  • Port decided at booking

Customs

ACID, Nafeza and CargoX

Egypt files before the goods move, not after they arrive, and the sequence is unforgiving.

An ACID number is registered on the Nafeza platform before departure, and the documents are transmitted from the origin country through CargoX. Sea shipments have worked this way since October 2021. Air shipments joined on 1 January 2026: every air consignment to Egypt now needs a valid ACID before it is loaded onto the aircraft.

The practical failure is almost always timing rather than substance. The filing is expected ahead of shipment, the commercial invoice has to follow the structured Nafeza template, and an ACID that does not exist when the goods are loaded cannot be repaired at the destination. Full detail is on the Egypt customs clearance page and in the ACID explainer.

  • ACID registered on Nafeza before departure
  • Documents transmitted via CargoX
  • Sea: mandatory since October 2021
  • Air: mandatory since 1 January 2026
  • Structured invoice template required

Trade lanes

Where Egyptian cargo goes next

The Egypt leg is usually part of a longer movement, and that is where the desk earns its place.

The published lanes run in both directions: UAE to Egypt and Egypt to the UAE, Syria to Egypt and Egypt to Syria.

The Syria pairing is the one most forwarders in Egypt cannot service end to end. MIDTRANS pairs its Damascus office with licensed partners in Egypt, so a consignment discharging at Damietta and continuing to Latakia or Tartous stays with one operations desk instead of being handed to a second company at the Egyptian quay.

  • UAE to Egypt, and Egypt to the UAE
  • Syria to Egypt, and Egypt to Syria
  • Offices in Dubai, Jebel Ali, Damascus, Tartous and Latakia; partner office in Guangzhou and Hong Kong; licensed partners in Egypt
  • One desk across the corridor
  • Onward legs planned at booking

How we operate

What we do ourselves, and what our partners do

Stated plainly, because it decides who is accountable for what.

Midtrans Shipping And Services is headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with further offices in Jebel Ali, Damascus, Tartous and Latakia and a partner office in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Egypt is a core market that we serve as a coordinating forwarder: routing, booking, documentation and corridor planning are handled by our own operations desk, while customs clearance and port handling inside Egypt are carried out by licensed Egyptian brokers and agents we appoint and supervise.

We do not operate a licensed customs brokerage of our own in Egypt, and we do not present partner capacity as our own. Our appointed broker attends the examination in person rather than sending papers to it, and our operations desk is on the call while it happens. Verification routes are on the Trust Center.

  • Head office in Dubai, UAE
  • Offices: Dubai, Jebel Ali, Damascus, Tartous, Latakia; partner office: Guangzhou, Hong Kong
  • No MIDTRANS customs licence in Egypt
  • Clearance by appointed licensed brokers
  • Broker attends examination in person

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is MIDTRANS freight forwarding for Egypt managed from?

From the MIDTRANS offices in Dubai (head office), Jebel Ali, Damascus, Tartous and Latakia, and a partner office in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The Egypt office opened in 2024 has since closed, so customs clearance and port handling inside Egypt are carried out by licensed Egyptian brokers and agents that MIDTRANS appoints and supervises, while routing and documents stay with our operations desk.

Do I need an ACID number for air freight to Egypt?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 every air shipment to Egypt requires a valid ACID number registered on Nafeza before the goods are loaded onto the aircraft. Sea shipments have required it since October 2021.

Who files the ACI, the importer or the exporter?

Both take part. The Egyptian importer registers the ACID on Nafeza, and the exporter transmits the documents from the origin country through CargoX. The number must exist before shipment.

Which Egyptian port should I use for cargo continuing to Syria?

Damietta most often, because it combines container handling with the Syria lane. The final choice depends on the liner service and the cargo, and is made at booking.

Can you clear goods in Egypt without your own licence there?

Yes, through licensed Egyptian customs brokers appointed and supervised by MIDTRANS. That is the standard structure for a foreign forwarder in Egypt, and we state it rather than implying our own licence.

What most often delays clearance in Egypt?

Timing rather than substance: an ACID raised too late, or a commercial invoice that does not follow the structured Nafeza template. Both are avoidable before the goods move.
