Al-Hasakah stands at the confluence of the Khabur and Jaghjagh rivers, about 80 km south of Qamishli, 400 km from Aleppo and 600 km from Damascus. The 2004 census counted 188,160 residents.
Farming is the base of the economy, supported by the Khabur River Project, which from the 1960s built the Hasakah West and Hasakah East dams and the Hasakah South dam 25 km south of the city.
