Latakia lies on the Mediterranean coast, 186 km south-west of Aleppo, and the Nahr al-Kabir al-Shamali reaches the sea just south of the city. It had 383,786 residents in the 2004 census, and Latakia Governorate 879,551.
The city is described as a significant manufacturing centre for the surrounding agricultural towns and villages. Its own industries include cotton ginning, vegetable-oil processing and tanning.
